The UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, has stressed the need for a lot more to work to be done before the UN meeting in Belém.
Stiell was speaking , at the closing plenary of the UN June Climate Meetings (SB62) in Bonn.
He said that there is so much more work to do to keep 1.5 alive, as science demands.
“We must find a way to get to the hard decisions sooner.” He said.
Need For Negotiations
He stressed the need for negotiators to sit together between sessions to find common ground.
“We need leaders and ministers to roll up their sleeves. This is your agenda. Your process. Progress here will benefit your people.” He stated.
According to the UN Scribe, “You have so much more in common than divides you. We need to spend more time reflecting and building on this.”
He said that outside of the halls, the transition is accelerating and presenting astonishing opportunities.
Steill said that smart leaders should form frontrunner groups to tackle tough issues and create the change.
Stronger NDC’s And NDC Synthesis Reports
“We look forward to receiving new and stronger NDCs by September, which will be included in a new NDC Synthesis Report.” He declared
This report, according to him, will show how far leaders have come and how far they must still go.
He said that this first BTR Synthesis Report and the report on progress on National Adaptation Plans will also share lessons and identify barriers to overcome.
“All eyes will then be on COP30, to deliver the response to these reports, and see how nations pick up the pace on implementation.” He stated.
UNFCCC Budget
The Executive Secretary thanked Parties for agreeing to the UNFCCC’s budget.
“We take this as a vote of confidence in our collective work and a clear signal that governments continue to see UN-convened climate cooperation as essential, even in difficult times,” Stille said.
He described it as a modest but vital investment as the process is humanity’s only means of preventing climate-driven global economic meltdown, with terrible human costs.
Accordingto Steille, “Just as we have no Planet B, there is no process B.”
“We will work to repay this trust by continuing to deliver on the mandates parties have given us while always seeking efficiency and continuous improvement.”

Steill commended the work done to ensure the success of the Bonn meeting, including on the Just Transition Work Programme, Gender, NAPs, Transparency and the UAE Dialogue [on Implementing the Global Stocktake Outcome)
