Bauchi Women Protest Against Mining Hazards

Women from Gada Biyu and nearby mining communities in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria, have protested against irresponsible mining activities posing threat to health and livelihood in their communities

Led by the Executive Director of Media Advocacy on Climate Change Initiative, Ugonma Matthias, the women are demanding a stronger enforcement of mining regulations in their communities.

Concerned over the severe environmental damage and health risks posed by the activities of mining companies, the women marched to the Bauchi office of the Federal Ministry of Mines to make their voices heard.

Matthias, who was represented by Jilima Bishari spearheaded the protest. She highlighted the devastating impact that mining has had on women and children in Gada Biyu.

The unchecked mining activities are causing untold suffering for our people, especially women and children,” She said.

She urged the state government to take immediate action to regulate mining operations, protect community members, and end the exploitation of vulnerable groups.

She called for rigorous enforcement of state mining laws to safeguard their well-being.

Grievances

The protesters detailed their grievances, pointing to the pollution and contamination of water supplies, harm to livestock, and the deafening impact of daily rock blasting.

They also raised concerns about child labor on mining sites, demanding an end to the exploitation of minors in their community.

The women emphasised the urgent need for a sustainable approach that considers the health and safety of those living near the mines.

Response to protest

Responding to the protest, Tukur Ibrahim, Director of Mines and Surveillance at the Federal Ministry of Mines in Bauchi State, promised to launch an immediate assessment of the situation and address the protesters’ demands.
