Liberia Receives 2,640 Metric Tons Rice Donation From Japan

The Liberian government says it has received 2,640 metric tons rice shipment donation from Japan.

The donation is part of the Japanese Grant Commodity Program, which aims to bolster food security and support Liberia’s socioeconomic development initiatives.

The rice, which arrived at Monrovia’s Freeport on Friday, will be distributed for commercial sale through leading rice importers Fouta Corporation, Northwest, and United Commodities Inc.

The government has set wholesale and retail prices at US$15.75 and US$16.50, respectively, and told the public to report any price gouging.

The rice will be monetized under the Japanese Grant Commodity Program. Proceeds from the rice sales will be allocated towards socio-economic projects not covered in the national budget.

The donation is a testament to the strong partnership between Liberia and Japan, with the Japanese government having donated a similar consignment of rice valued at US$1.5 million in June last year.
